Full Version: Bloated Stats From Urchin?

Hi gang,

I just moved over to MC and my old stats are still accessible.
You can see the day I moved was Jan 8th.
Extreme Tracking shows an average of about 30 unique visitors or so per day.
Rocky Trail Old Stats Link

Urchin, is showing about 175 "sessions" per day.

Why? What's the difference between "Unique Visitors" and "Sessions".

Is alll the work I'm doing on my site and and checking my own site creating the difference I wonder?

Does anyone know what this text means:
For the most accurate numbers, the Urchin Traffic Monitor (UTM) should be used.

Hi Chuck,

Unique Visitors means that the person visiting is coming from a unique location. So if I come to your site, it logs my IP, and I am unique.

However, sessions is the time length of my visit, so if I come and leave 30 minutes later, then come back 4 hours later in the day, I have 2 sessions, but only 1 is unique.

RockyTrail
Hi,
Thanks for the clarification!

1) Does Urchin offer a view option for unique visitors?

2) By your definintion, if, based on my average old stats, I was getting 40 unique visitors/day and Urchin is reporting an average of 170 sessions/day, each unique visitor is coming back 4 times each day. Can this be true?

1 person is coming back 170 times
2 people are coming back 85 times
3 people are coming back 57 times
4 people are coming back 42 times
10 people are coming back 17 times
30 people are coming back 6 times each day
50 people are coming back 3.5 times a day

This is what you are saying right?
Is the above extrapolation viewed in Urchin as unique visitors anywhere?
Chuck

It does not offer a view option for unique visitors. That requires the UTM module which ups the cost of Urchin greatly. You can view the domains people came from, where they clicked to, what they searched for, and more, but you cannot view each individual unique visitor.

It very well could be true, but I will take a look at your stats to verify on that.

Actually,

You cannot really view the Unique visitor information, because you do not have the UTM module installed. So, how would you gather that information on your end to produce your list ::::

1 person is coming back 170 times
2 people are coming back 85 times
3 people are coming back 57 times
4 people are coming back 42 times
10 people are coming back 17 times
30 people are coming back 6 times each day
50 people are coming back 3.5 times a day

:::

I am showing that on Jan 30th, you had 181 sessions. These sessions were very well spread out. 87 came straight to your store. Several came from search engines. You had a variety of search terms that were used when people were looking for your store.

There is no way to verify the unique visitor count without the UTM module however, and sorry for my mis-information above in that regard. I would however say that based on your old stats and your new stats, that even though your sessions have risen up, I would not say that each person is coming back more and more. I would say that you are getting either a) new customers visiting the store or b) search engines spidering the store.

RockyTrail
Hi,
I made up the list based on my own mathematical extrapolation of your explanation.

I'm not sure I would imagine that many people (other than me) are visiting the site more than once in any given day.

My next question would be about my visits.
Since I'm building the site I DO visit mant times a day.
I visit the storefront and I visit admin many times as I load and change things.

Are these tracked in Urchin and grouped a "sessions"? Or, are my visits ignored.

Chuck

Your visits are counted in the stats. They are all encompassing, so they do include anytime you visit the site.
