Full Version: Different Products With The Same Name
MonsterSmallBusiness Forums > MonsterCommerce > How do I?

OK, I'm in the midst of changing around some of our categories and renaming products. I have different products in the same style but in different categories.

For example, I have curtains named as follows (completely category name shown):

Curtains > Wildlife > Moon Over Moose Curtains

and I have the same style futon set here:

Futon Cover Sets > Wildlife > Moon Over Moose Futon Cover Set

I'm concerned about the duplication of words in the title tag for each product. What kinds of problems can I expect if I renamed my products as follows:

Curtains > Wildlife > Moon Over Moose
Futon Cover Sets > Wildlife > Moon Over Moose

Each item would have its own product code, it's just the name that would be the same.

Thank you!

Oh, duh ..... I just realized one HUGE problem would be that only the product name is entered into the shopping cart so I wouldn't have any idea which product the customer ordered. Bummer.

I suppose I could do something like this:

Window Treatments > Wildlife > Moon Over Moose Curtains
Futon Covers > Wildlife > Moon Over Moose Futon Cover Set

In the first case, the other keywords are useful. In the latter case, well, I dunno ... a futon cover is a futon cover is a futon cover. What else would you call it that prospective customers would use in keyword searches?

Bedroom curtains

Futon bed cover

I'm glad you answered your own question on the name change. I was about to respond that the customer might get confused about exactly what they ordered since the name Moon Over Moose might not be descriptive enough on their receipt/email confirmation.

Interesting you bring this up as I was recently searching this out (sorry didn't want a moose tho--we have real ones around here--that's enough for me)

A futon cover could also be: cover for a futon mattress, futon mattress cover, futon bed cover--ah it goes on and on...... pinch.gif ineedanap biggrin.gif

Not only would it be confusing for you to have two different products with the same name, it will confuse the HTML catalog when creating the pages. I, too, had different products with the same name, but different leaflet numbers so I would never have been confused (i.e. Bookmarks). But I didn't want my catalog goofed up so I changed them to be Cross Stitch Bookmarks and Plastic Canvas Bookmarks.

Julie,

It might also have a negative SEO impact. (My assumption is that more folks would be searching for "cover set" or "curtains" than "Moon Over Moose"...but I could be wrong.)

Some people are going to search for "Moose Curtains".
"Moon Over Moose" is a pretty common pattern within the rustic circle so people do search on that phrase when they are comparing prices or looking for other items in that pattern.

I have a similar question. My products are (or could be) called:
10" Shallow Wooden Spoon, 12" Shallow Wooden Spoon and 12" Deep Wooden Spoon, 15" Deep Wooden Spoon, etc.

Since apparently you can't use the double quote (") sign for inches and I don't like the looks of "in", how do I distinguish between them without them all sounding the same?
gee, am I confused unsure.gif

Thanks, purplekitty (love kitties, but never saw a purple one before! cool.gif )

I thought there was some discussion of it in forums awhile back but couldn't find it. Post from Steph not too long ago as well as kb manual still says you can't use " sign. I'll go ahead and use them. aok.gif

I can't use the single quote. The single quote duplicates itself so that if I had I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting, it would eventually look like I Can''''t Believe I''''m Crocheting. I never did figure out why it was doing that, but I took out all of my single quotes. It looks kind of stupid to have I Cant Believe Im Crocheting, but it's better than the alternative at this point.

Oh, don't use the single quote in the category name either. Not sure if this will still do this, but when I upgraded from 3.x to 4.0, my entire product listings for Annie's Attic and Maggie's Crochet was dropped. Thank God for dataport!

I have never had (knock on wood) a problem with the double quotes used as an inches mark.

In the dreaded manual it says

QUOTE
7. Product Name
Enter the product’s name. The product's name should be short but descriptive. Give each product a unique name. Please do not use the “ symbol. If your product name contains inches, please use the in. abbreviation.

So I have stayed away from using " and instead just spell out inches. I don't like in. either.

I did not know about the single quote issue. I have used these occasionally.

Maybe monstersmile.gif needs to clarify this?

I use apostrophes quite frequently.

I wonder why you had a problem with them.

Actually, the only problem I've had is that the search doesn't recognize them.

Maybe it's been fixed. I'm always leery of putting something back in or doing something the way I did it previously after it caused me all kinds of work to fix it. I guess I should try it again with a few products and see what happens.

I had a problem with the single apostrophe within my categories (Mother's Day). A day, a week or so after using them in my category names, a new category would appear (Mothers Day) with no products in it, right next to the one I had made.

Will definitely be checking out the use of the quotation mark for inches, hope it works! Perhaps this was a fix for 4.1.

Isn't it weird that we all have different experiences with the single versus double quotes? wacko.gif

I've used the double quotes for months as an inches mark without a problem.
