Hi All,
When Using the WYSIWYG, what is the difference between the little boat anchor, and the little world with the link on it?
I know the boat anchor says "insert anchor text", but isn't that the same as using the little world icon?
Thx,
Ben N

Hi Ben,

The anchor lets you create a point on the page to link to..say you want to link to the mid point of a page.

My customer support page has some examples of anchor linking. The links in purple are the anchors.

Thanks SRG 7 Crash, but it is still not making much sense to me.
Crash, when I click on one of your purple link, it puts me on a different page. Isn't that the same as just creating a link with the little world thing?

They actually take you farther down the page.

The process to set this up in wysiwyg is to drop anchors at spots on the page where you want to link to (make the user's browser scroll down to that spot automatically). Anchors come in very handy where you have long pages with lots of stuff...like a FAQ page maybe.

Then you create a normal l,ink (using the world) only instead of choosing a page path, you sleect the anchor name from the dropdown list.

Check out this page of mine:

When you click on the letter at the top of the page, you go to that letter of abbreviations.

Anybody know how a spider treats anchor links? Does an anchor link on the same page count as another step in how far a spider will delve into the site on that visit?

Hmm, that's a good question. Don't know for sure but wouldn't it treat it like any other link?

Thats what I was thinking. In that case I am NOT goin to use anchors on my site map page like I considered. Was going to list categories and anchor link down to them on the site map. No point. That just delays the spiders getting through to my other pages by one step. Make sense? Im getting too tried to think about my site map and anchors at this point...lol.

NOW I understand. lightbulb.gif I thought they called that movement something different. I was going to do that for our recipe catalog, but did it another way.
I just completed another Sitemap page for your viewing pleasure. happy.gif
I read the article, and it got me to thinking (uh ohhh whistling.gif ). I'm going to pretty much create an HTML Sitemap page for almost every one of our categories, and link 'em all together. I'll do a separate page for the major product cats, then for the cats where there are only a couple of items, I'll group those together.
Now THAT'LL keep those little 8 legged critters busy chomping away at our site.
