Full Version: Discount Codes

I am wondering if anyone has found a way to apply a discount code to just a subset of categories.

We would like to give 20% off as a "grand opening" sale, but there is one category that we would like to keep at regular prices (books -- low profit margins).

I know that I can apply a discount code to the entire store and to just one category. We do not appear to be able to "pick and choose" our categories, though.

Is there a workaround?

Hey Robert. I think I might know a way... but it's kinda nasty. I'm not even sure if it would work so you'd have to test it.

Create Multiple Discounts with the "same discount code" and amount for each specific catagory you want to give the discount to.

I told you it was a nasty workaround... Like I said thou - don't know if it would really work. Nor, if you'd want to setup 20 or so different discount entries for your purpose...

Let me know either way... If not, I'll test it just to know. whistling.gif

I believe that you can use the same discount code & name and just repeat it multiple times to apply it to different categories. As far as I can tell there is no 'uniqueness' clause in the naming of your discount codes.

Good Luck,

Adnan,

Are you out there, Mr. Tech Guy? Will I screw things up if I use the same discount code name 8 times?

We need a new feature that lets us apply a dc to specific categories! Easily. No nasty work arounds!

[B]This is exactly how I did it, and it works great! I had asked the same question to tech support and the above was the answer.

To clarify...

Create A Discount fo each category you want the discount to apply using the same discount code. Goes fast once you get going.

Thanks. Got a similar reply from Tech, although it was vague on a couple of points.

If it works for you, it should work for us.

It did NOT work for me. I created a discount code (named "15") for most of the categories. I first gave as the DiscountName for each code the name of the category. Thus, each category had a different discount name but the same DC: 15. The effect was that I saw the discount for only one of the categories.

I then changed the name of the Discount Name to "15" for all categories. Thus, I had a Discount Name and Discount code called "15" for the categories. Again, the discount appeared for only one category.

For all categories I clicked the "cookie" option.

Any thoughts?

Robert,

In Admin Panel Goto > Inventory > Discount Code Editor

This is how I have my discount information set up.

Discount Name| Discount Code| Category| Discount Amount| Can be Entered| Can be Cookied

Mail List| ML0001| Giftware| 0.3000 (30%)| Checked| Not Checked
Mail List| ML0001| Housewares| 0.3000| Checked| Not Checked
Mail List| ML0001| Garden| 0.3000| Checked| Not Checked

And so on for each category I want the discount in!

Dont be cookied unless you want this option:

CAN BE COOKIE - That means that people can see the discount by entering into the site with a small string attached to the end of the URL called a cookie. It works like this:

http://www.NAMEOFYOURSTORE.COM/store.asp?d...dc=DISCOUNTCODE

As an example see how we have done our demo store:

http://www.MONSTERCOMMERCEDEMO.COM/store.asp?dc=ebay

Note that the prices show a 20% discount!

Let me know if you still have problems!

This works on my site perfectly... cool.gif

I know all this, have codes that look pretty much like yours, and still did not get the intended result.

I want cookies because they show the customer the prices before the discount.

Maybe I'll have to wait for 4.0. I understand that they are making some improvements to this part of the program.

Robert,

Sorry it isn't working for you. I have not used the cookie part of it because I didn't want people easily coming back more than once with the same discount.

The other way works perfectly for me and takes the discounts in the right categories and leaves the ones I want to alone.

Ho Hum! We tried..........

Robert,

V4.0 will allow you to add a discount to any category/subcategory, this makes a big difference for every store owner. You will have much more power over your discounts. Unfortunately I'm unable to give you an answer for V3.0 because I'm currently only programming the new V4.0.

cbhale,
Thank you very much for all your support and suggestions, it is very much appreciated.
robert
Adnan, that's what I understand! I Can't wait for 4.0!
