Full Version: Remove Left Column? Seo Strategy
MonsterSmallBusiness Forums > MonsterCommerce > How do I?

search engine spiders index mc sites with the entire left column first before moving to the main body of the page. This is bad news if you are trying to capitalize on one niche over other products you may sell. You can test this with this tool: http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/search-en...simulator.shtml
So far I have not been able to direct the spiders to the body by placing a horizontal line or table at the top of the left column. It should read table - body - left column. MC tech support has been no help so far, so in the mean time I'm moving my cart and category nav to the right side. Now I can't remove the left side column. Any hacks or ideas?

Until you figure that out, do what you can with the META fields on the category pages involved (you should do this anyway).

BTW, a search engine simulator does not necessarily work like a particular search engine spider. Google, for instance, is always dinking with their methodology. Titles and headings get a lot of "juice" no matter where in the code they are (unless you have 1000 words in front of it, then it may not even get noticed). martiniemoticon.gif

Ya I've done all that stuff - I'm always dinking around too trying new angles. So far I've been able to move from page 13 to page 1 in yahoo on my best keywords but just can't crack page 1 on google or msn yet.

Iceman,

Keep up the good work and I'm sure you will reach the top pages. Regarding your concerns with the left columns, I have heard this issue raised before. Whereas it is possible to create a web page from scratch where the left column comes up in the source code AFTER the center column, doing so within our e-commerce software would require a change to the cart functionality. This feature does not yet exist, but it has been suggested previously.

This design is sometimes referred to as the holy grail.

Want a suggestion in the meantime? Why not use an anchor link tag to send the user / search engine to the content. Put this link in your header or left column and link it to #AutoNumber4. I hope this helps.

James - that is a great suggestion!
