Full Version: I Have A Very Strange Problem...

lighting for you
When I designed my front page, everything seems to work fine, but I have been having customers call and say that parts of the front page was missing.
Apparently my front page works on some computers but not on others.
More specifically the front page SHOULD show a bar with the word chandeliers, then 13 pictures under it, followed by a bar for sconces etc...
Those 13 pictures don’t show. Those chandelier pictures also don’t show when you click "chandeliers" at the top on SOME computers. I asked one person where it didn’t show and they were using IE7.0 but I cannot guarantee that’s the only browser.
I simply can't figure it out! I use IE6 as well as firefox and it works perfectly for me.
ANY help would mean the world to me, i think it may have something to do with tables, but i dont know how to code very well.
Thank you so much!

Hey Ray,

Maybe you could give us a link to your website and I am sure more than a few people will look at it.

After migration, I had this problem also but it only lasted for a couple of days. One hour the images would be there, the next time they would be gone. One thing to check is your browser settings, make sure you refresh each time you visit a web page. The problem for me went away on its own.

Works perfect in Firefox 3 for mac. Looks pretty nice as well. Launched I.E. 7 and the top menu is missing, the 13 pictures for chandelier is there, the pictures for sconces are there, but the two pictures for lamps are missing. Good ole I.E. wish I knew what to suggest to fix it, maybe another Monstah will have the answer for you.

I'm no HTML expert but aren't you supposed to close <div> tags? Before and after the areas missing in IE7 there are <div> tags with no close. IE7 may not like that, if in fact you are supposed to close those.

I've looked through the source on both Firefox and IE7 and that's the only difference I can find. I can see everything on the page when using FF but the billard photo as well as the two under Lamps are missing in IE7.

just upgraded to IE7 and youre right it seems to be that browser.
I dont know what you mean by closing the divs. i tried going < /div> after each chunk of my header to get that top bar to show, but it didnt work.
am i doing something wrong?
anyone can tell me what to do with this code?

No HTML expert either, but I think you are suppose to close each <div> I notice you have two in this code. You might try to close the first one before opening the second one.

I put your source code in Dreamweaver and it's highlighting errors and unclosed tags all over the place, so this may not be what it is, but when I went to view mode I noticed that "Call Us Toll Free (866) 45-LIGHT (866) 455-4448" was out to the right of everythign else. Your code:

CODE
<div style="position:relative; left:440px;"><FONT color=#f5f5f5> Call Us Toll Free (866) 45-LIGHT (866) 455-4448</FONT></font></A></div>

That area looks ok in IE7 to me, but in Dreamweaver it's out to the right of the page.

I would take out the position coding and do something like this:
CODE
<div style="margin-left:440px;"><FONT color=#f5f5f5> Call Us Toll Free (866) 45-LIGHT (866) 455-4448</FONT></font></A></div>

After the change, that area was under your menu buttons, and the right side of the page was pulled in correctly. In Dreamweaver I couldn't replicate your site without downloading a lot more, but this seems to have stopped the extra bump to the right. Also, I looked around at the errors and noticed that thre were a lot of unclosed tags and a lot that were closed incorrectly.

IE:
CODE
<table><tr><td><a href="">xxxx</td></tr></table></a>

Should be :

CODE
<table><tr><td><a href="">xxxx</a></td></tr></table>

You have to properly close the tags in the same order. You cannot close a tag that was opened inside of a tag on outside of that parent tag.

Again I'm no expert but I noticed a period where it doesn't look like it should be:
<style>.invoice-detail-header{background-color:black;}</style>

There's a slash at the end of this code that looks out of place:
<td class="module-header"><img src="/themes/migration/images/layout/mod_head_cart_lt.gif" alt="Shopping Cart" style="border-width:0px;" /></td>

About half way down the page is this code and the carriage return should be, as far as I know, <br /> with a space:
<td id="ctl00_centerColumn" class="page-column-center"><table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><br/>

These as well are showing up with an out of place slash:
<input type="hidden" name="__EVENTTARGET" id="__EVENTTARGET" value="" />
<input type="hidden" name="__EVENTARGUMENT" id="__EVENTARGUMENT" value="" />

One good thing about Firefox is that when you view the source of a page, it likes to show out of place characters in red. There are more slashes that I didn't quote that show up red in the meta tags.

This one I'm confused about:
<quote><div>
<input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUKLTMxNjc3NTM3NQ9kFgJmD2QWAgIDDxYCHgVjbGFzcwUKaW5kZXgtcGFnZRY

BRljdGwwMCRjdGwwMyRtdHZDYXJ0U3RhdHVzDw9kAgFkJ1E/lyf5a1EE/fulsRMdGhctyA8=" />

</div>
</quote>
I pasted that in the box here to post it but it was major wide so I reduced it to a few lines. I'm not sure what it's for and it could be causing the problem. I was looking for table widths in percentages but didn't see any as that can be the issue sometimes. I just noticed someone posted a response as I'm typing this so maybe they have the answer for you.

The viewstate stuff is asp.net auto-generated code. It shouldn't cause a problem.
