Full Version: Urgent - Check Your Sites! Item # Showing In Titles
MonsterSmallBusiness Forums > MonsterCommerce > Using MonsterCommerce Software

I just noticed this today, called tech support and they stated that every site they checked is doing the same thing!

I do NOT want my item #'s showing up in my page title. Our product listings will get indexed with this # in the product name, this is ridiculous.

Anyone else seeing this in the title of their product pages?

They told me it's probably always been there and I just never noticed it. Wrong!!!!

Hi,

I didn't see anything on my pages. Do you mean the Item Number and rtist Name as shown on your page for Gourds? Here is the link: http://www.uniquedecoronline.com/index.asp...amp;ProdID=1228

I noticed the two bullet items underneath the Add to Wish List link. Is this what is showing up and it wasn't there before?

Sorry I can't be of more help. But I wanted to chime in and let you know my product pages are unchanged.

I will check back to read updates and I wish you a speedy fix to your problem. hug.gif

No, it's at the very top of your page...the Title...check your product pages to see what's appearing next to your page titles (product names)...in the browser bar at the top

Interesting..mine is showing it also. Heartland...going to send you a PM on this one....

I just couldn't believe that they inferred that it had probably always been like that and I just hadn't noticed. Of course we're gonna notice!

I also have noticed that I now have listings in Google and Yahoo that have the item number right there next to what SHOULD be my page title.

So, with that being said, how is this affecting our rankings when all of a sudden our indexed product titles have all changed?!?!?! bash.gif

It can't be a good thing!

Hi Heartland,

This is how product page titles have always displayed since version 4.0 was released back in 2004. If I had to guess if you were using variants, or advanced variants and this information was not filled in then it would not have displayed for you, but this is how it was always designed. Note that this is to create uniqueness in product titles so that when you have the Name of products the same, the part number is the different factor and will help with your SEO.

Joe,

These part #'s were NEVER in my page titles before. In fact, I have a complete backup of my site done months ago that I can send you to show proof that this is the case! I definitely would have noticed if they were there before! I do all the work on my site and I'm very particular about everything with regard to it.

Some of my page titles are only 2-3 words long!! Believe me, I would have noticed the part #'s showing. I also have cached pages from Google that DO NOT show the part # in page titles! Something changed...why? I don't want them there! It should be our option as merchants whether we want them displayed or not (if it's some new thing you are doing.)

Even lead tech support said that he didn't remember seeing it before!

Hi heartland -

I've double checked this in older versions of the cart and have verified that the part number has been included within the title since at least mid-2005. The oldest version of the software I was able to check this against was released at that time. The part number would not be included in the page title if your product pages are not set to display the part number, or if no part number is specified for the product.

We'll make sure to document the ability to control whether or not it is included in the page title through a setting as a feature request. Thank you!

Hi Heartland,

I am not sure who you talked to in support, but as a Supervisor for Ecom Support and having worked for MC over 3 years and worked in QA on the design of the 4.x cart, I can clearly state that this is the way it has always been.

If you have the Part Number field filled in on the product editor 'Product Part Number' on that page, it will display in the Title bar of the site when viewing the product. I checked your product, it was last updated on 6/2/2007. So if you added in this information then, that is why it is displaying. If you do not want it to display, simply remove that information from the product.

Joe...

I spoke to Jeremy! All my products have always had part #'s, since I started in 05. Until just the past week, they have NOT showed up in my page titles. So...two things:

They are only now starting to appear in Google with the part #'s displayed...because they only recently started appearing that way! Google's cache of product pages clearly shows NO part # in the page title.

And I'm real close to you guys, I'd be happy to bring the file over that shows that my site did not have part #'s in the page titles on my last backup.

I know for a fact, that they had NOT appeared in the title until recently.

Hi Heartland,

I worked with Brad, and I checked this myself on a cart that was over two years old on version history and it does in fact display this. Are you sure that you were not using MFG partnumbers before and now switched them to partnumbers. If you have them in the MFG partnumber field it will not display but as if they are in the Product Part number field it will display then.

This would be the only possiblity. So in the end all I can say is if you don't want it to display remove it from that field, or move it to the MFG Part Number field. Or if you go to settings >> site wide settings >> Product List and Details and have the option Display Product Part Number within Product Detail Page set to Yes it will display so set that option to No.

So...here's a question. I guess what you are telling me is that if I choose to display the part # in my product layout, it immediately becomes part of the title. Though I still think that should be a choice...

And...if the part # is NOT displayed in the layout, it won't appear in my page title? Is that correct?
heartland
No...I didn't suddenly move 1000 part #'s...they are where they've always been. In the product part # field, not mfr part # field.

wackyjazz
This is incorrect Tech Support. Go to G and type in Site:myurl.com and you will not see any ID numbers in any of my titles.....

Hi Heartland,

That is correct if you display the partnumber on the page with that site wide setting, it will display in the title bar. Note if you use the APD/Product Details Editor, you should not need to set that option in site wide settings as your own custom template will overwrite that option. So as stated, if you have a part number field filled in and you are using a default APD template and you have the option settings >> site wide settings >> Product List and Details - Display Product Part Number within Product Detail Page set to Yes, it will then display the partnumber. So in the end again simply remove that part number, use a custom template and set that option to No...

No numbers if you do the site: command, but if you do a keyword search and get a product url to show up in the results, you will see the part number.
heartland
I don't want to remove the part #...it's always been there. It has not always been displayed in my product layout. That is the difference. I did not know that simply choosing to show the part # in the product layout, immediately made it a part of the page title. If this is what's causing it...then that's what I need to know.

But above this...it should be my choice to display it in the title, not an automatic action by the software. IMHO

Hello Heartland,

On your site, I have made the change for the option Display Product Part Number within Product Detail Page to No. As you will see on http://www.uniquedecoronline.com/index.asp...amp;ProdID=1228

It still displays the part number not in the title but in the page because you use a Custom HTML Template in HTML >> Product Details Editor.

So as I stated above, you do have options. You can simply turn off that option in site wide settings and by using the custom html template that you were already using it will be just as it always had.

In the end the here are your following options.

1. Part number displays in title - this means you are using a default HTML template in HTML >> Product Details Editor with the Part number field filled in on the product editor and this means you have the option in Site Wide Settings set to display the part number on the product details page set to Yes. The other option is you have that option in site wide settings set to yes, you are using a custom template and the part number field is filled in.

2. To not have the part number display, have the option in site wide settings set to No, and use a Custom HTML Template. The other option is to not fill in the part number field.

If you have any questions please contact support as the software is working as it should.
