Hi. Has anyone added a blog or discussion forum to their ecommerce site? As always, I've been investigating ways to increase organic search traffic and have read that these two methods can be successful. Has anyone done this? If so, would you recommend any companies to use? Thanks. Hope everyone is having great success!

Best regards,

Renee

I use two blogs for all my sites. Does it work? Not sure yet, but I do get a lot of spider traffic from them. For blogging software, Google offers this for free. Both of my blogs are powered by Wordpress.

You will most likely want to host your forum or blog with a sub-domain of your main site, e.g. blog.shopsublime.com / forum.shopsublime.com. You can do this pretty easily in a number of ways.

You can use Blogger (owned by Google) with your own sub-domain for free. You can find instructions for this at Blogger Buzz: Blogger Custom Domains. Sign up on their site and get your sub-domain set up.

You can also use Wordpress, though I find it to be more feature-rich, it's also much more complex. Whereas you can find places to host a WP blog for free, you can also host it at any PHP hosting provider and thereby get support for it. For instance, Network Solutions has recently added WP blogs.

Proboards.com is a good source for free (ad supported) forum hosting. NetSol also offers BoardServer. Both blogs and forums are only as good as you work to maintain them, so keep up with them, post often and they will benefit you.

I hope this helps.

Thank you both so much for the info. I'll start there. Have a great day!

I definitely want to use Blogger for my blog.

Questions:
Do I have to host my blog on a sub-domain of my site to take advantage of increased traffic and search engine optimization of my website?

If I do, then I'm guessing I have to pay my domain registrar for a new sub-domain correct?

If I do all this and set Blogger to point to my new sub-domain, am I still using the Blogger tools to manage my blog on my new sub-domain?

Thanks!

I recommend setting up your blog or forum on a sub-domain of your own domain but it is not required. Blogger allows you to set up a sub- account on Blogspot, e.g. shopsublime.blogspot.com. As long as the customization and links on your blog point to your site, it should be fine. It can be said that there are some SEO benefits if it is on your own domain, but it's not required.

All good registrars (including Network Solutions) will allow you to set up sub-domains for free. You should not need to register a sub-domain separately. All you have to do from your registrar is set up the CNAME to point the sub-domain to the blog host's server -- ghs.google.com in Blogger's case.

Once you have followed the steps, you will continue to administer your blog as normal through Blogger's tools. The output will be seen at the sub-domain.

Thanks - I think I have decided to not use a subdomain because I want to have my blog link to have a popular keyword term that my domain name does not have. I have therefore, moved forward with a seperate "blogspot.com" link name and have already begun submitting it to various "ping" services, etc.

I have just set up analytics on it and will be monitoring to see what king of traffic I get to the new blog and in turn to my ecommerce site.

Wish me luck!
