Full Version: Mc Dataport With Microsoft Works

I was trying to use Microsoft Works (Version 7.0) to update my store information, but when I tried to import it back into the MC dataport I had to assign, categories, Part number, etc., all 44 of the blanks. So I figured out a faster way. It may not be the best way, but it works until I can figure a better way.
The problem is that when Microsoft Works saves the file back into a csv file it puts quotation marks around the information in the first row of your spreadsheet, so all you need to do is replace the information up to the first product category. If you know a better way please e-mail me at Deon2@starband.net.
I do not have excel, so don’t say “use excel.”

HOW TO:
If you do not have any products in your store you need to set up at least one complete product so you will have an example to go by.

Open MC dataport. Import your store into the data port.
Export the data to a csv file (the “text pad” <-- “DP”) button in the MC dataport.
Now open your Microsoft Works Spread Sheet.
Open the file you saved, you will need to select show “All Files” to see the csv file.
Now make your changes, or add to your products.
Now save your file as a Text & commas csv file, but change the name. Do not overwrite you original file, as you can use this to restore your store if you mess-up plus you need some info from it later on.
Now you can close Microsoft works. Now open the original csv file that you exported from the MC data port. Copy the first section up to the first category of your products. Now close that file. Open your updated file and and paste the copied information from your clipboard over the top of the “almost same information” up to the first product category. Now save that file. Open MC data port and import that file into the data port. If all went well all of the blanks will be filled. You can now upload your information to your website.

Good luck,

Hi, we use a similar process that works well too. Any changes that effect more than 5 products, are done in Lotus Approach which is a native db4 format. I sort and isolate the products I've added or modified and export them as a comma delimited text file with the field lables. Afterward, I simply open the export in any word processor and use find to quickly eliminate the quotes from the field titles, make sure there is not a space or return at the end of the file and resave it as a txt file - csv. These import to dataport fast and clean. Have exported 10s of thousands of products with this technique with little or no problems.

Question: Could dataport be modified to recognize field lables with quotes and eliminate the extra step?

brassunicorn,

Okay, I just made a modification to strip out the doublequotes from the column headings. Come the next release it should be fixed.

Too Cool! You Rock Charles! With that mod, I should be able to simply export from my database program as a comma seperated text file including headers ... change extention from .txt to .csv and import. Can't wait to try it out!
