Full Version: How To Forward Order Notifications To Your Cell Phone

I don't like having to check my E-Mail every 10 minutes for new orders. I do anyway, because I'm a sad little man, but I wanted to be able to step away if I need to. Here is how to forward your order notifcation to any SMS enabled phone:

I use Mozilla Thunderbird (Current version 1.5.0.4), but this will work on any modern E-Mail client (and most web based software) since all you need to do is forward the E-Mail based on its subject. The following directions are for Thunderbird:

1) Click Tools > Message Filters
2) Select the account that recieves your new order notifcations next to "Filters for"
3) Click "New"
4) Name the filter "Order Notification Forwarding" or something descriptive
5) Setup the rule to "Match any of the following", "Subject", "Contains", and in the text box type "New Order Alert" (without the quotes). Be sure to type is exactly as it appears on your orders subject line, in case it's different than mine
6) Under "Perform these actions" select "Forward message to" and put in your E-Mail address using the info provided below:

Verizon: 10digitphonenumber@vtext.com
Former AT&T customers: 10digitphonenumber@mmode.com
Sprint: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@tmomail.net
Nextel: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.nextel.com
Cingular: 10digitphonenumber@cingularme.com
Virgin Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@vmobl.com
Alltel: 10digitphonenumber@alltelmessage.com OR
10digitphonenumber@message.alltel.com
CellularOne: 10digitphonenumber@mobile.celloneusa.com
Omnipoint: 10digitphonenumber@omnipointpcs.com
Qwest: 10digitphonenumber@qwestmp.com

(Thanks to Google for providing provider info which can be found here.)

7) Click OK to save the filter and close the "Message Filter" window
8) Test your filter by sending yourself an E-Mail with the subject "New Order Alert" (or whatever you used)

Viola! You no longer have to sit in front of your computer to be notified about new orders! Don't forget that your E-Mail program has to be on and connected to the Internet for this to work. Good luck!

I don't know about you, but I don't want the only copy of the notification sent to my phone. I don't trust SMS or my cell phone enough for that. Besides, I like to file my messages on my computer as well. The method shown above is just so you can be notified.

You can add as many email addresses in the Admin panel, just separate with a comma.

Hello All -

Currently you can setup One specific email address to receive order alerts in the admin panel.

This is setup in Settings >> Site Wide Settings >> Email Content (tab). Once this setting is set that will then receive all order alert emails. In this location you could set up your cell phones email address in that field.

So monstersmile.gif Pilot is wrong about multiple E-Mails seperated by a comma?
Thanks,

Hi Sc,

That is correct, only one email address in the admin panel. Once that address is set though you can edit that email account to forward to whatever email accounts you would like so this accomplishes the same task.

Thanks for the post, great idea. I presently use a Treo, which has its own email client, to monitor the orders away from the computer. But have wanted to give an employee access to the orders without buying them a Treo, so your idea will probably be a perfect solution.

Again thanks for the post.

This is a great idea.

If you use sendmail on your webhost for a mail server, just add an alais to your alaises file to send to both your cell and multiple email addresses.

For example, neworder@yourstore.com will forward to orderalert@yourstore.com and to yournumber@yourcarrier.com

CODE

neworder:orderalert,10digitphonenumber@carrier.com

Now a copy goes to both. You will monitor the 'orderalert' account.
If you don't have control over your sendmail aliases file, contact your webhost.

-- problem is with spam of course. I can't remember is the email you provide to backend at Monstercommerce becomes public or not.

If so then in that case that you wish to filter the subject line and maybe the body text, you'll need to send the mail through a procmail recipe .
