Full Version: Urchin Stats Question

I was migrated on Monday. Love Version 4.0.

Anyone else notice a sharp decrease in hits being reported in Urchin after the migration process?

Our hit totals fell be 90% and I feel the numbers don't realistically represent the traffic to our site. We're still getting orders so either our sales conversion factor went through the roof or Urchin is on the fritz.

Anyone else seeing the same problem or perhaps a fine monstersmile.gif Tech could shed some light on this for me.
Captain
I'll ask Adam about this... phone.gif My guess is that your Urchin is on the fritz. I don't think you'll experience anything but an increase in traffic.

Hi Saxon-

This is most likely due to your stats not changing to the new IP. I'll make sure the review team gets this taken care of for you today. Thanks!
adminguy
Andy is 100% on the money on this one. We are a little behind on that one area for some of the migrations and trying to catch up. We do apologize for the delays, but basically the issue with the hits going down sharply are because of the fact that Urchin is not reading the correct new log file location.

We are working to get that changed, but should anyone want to confirm this has been done or ask if this may be an issue please feel free to submit a ticket and we will check and/or move you up the list on getting configs updated for you!

As always, thanks for your patience on this matter!

Thanks for solving the issue guys. It's not a major distruption and I'll make due till the IP info is updated.

I am having the same problem. I submitted a ticket yesterday. I am not getting any stats on referrals and terms. My traffic has also reduced according to the stats. noexpression.gif
Captain
Adam is on it... (see above)
saxongifts
Now my stats have ballooned in the other direction – I’m getting 10 times my normal hits – all un-referred traffic. Either Urchin is still on the fritz or our URL is listed on some newsletter, publication etc. I tend to think something is still flaky with Urchin.

I can still cut through the inflated numbers and gather the info I need – so place it on the minor bug list. Just an FYI in case others start complaining of the same issue.

Same issue here -

I thought monstersmile.gif might be running some sort of tests on recently migrated sites.

Any clues as to what is going on with the stats?

MineralBeauty
My stats dropped considerably once the problem was corrected on saturday! I hope thats an urchin issue! sad.gif

Hello!

We are still investigating both issues. The no referral issues can be due to one of many different things... (bookmarking, typing directly in browser, etc...). Stats also could drop off if people had your old IP cached in some way.

We'll let you know what we come up with. Thanks!

One of the areas we are a little off on in is resetting stats locations/configs. We are catching up, going through and changing settings, as mentioned before, please submit a support ticket if you feel something is odd or otherwise not right/out of place.

When we do change the log file location in Urchin though, the information displayed is just as accurate/the same as Urchin reading from the old location. In both cases the log files are in the same format, etc, etc. I have double checked the log format and it contains the same amount of information on the new servers as the old, so reporting should be fine.

I am planning an Urchin upgrade at the end of this month to bring us to the latest updated release version of Urchin (minor releases), although none of the items I have seen in the minor release notes indicate any calculation problems for log files.

Hey Adam,

Well I submitted a ticket on this issue. My stats dropped 80% as far as unique visitors per day since saturday when urchin was corrected. That can't be right? I am seeing the stats on referring sites and search terms now but there is no way that the traffic (unique visitors/sessions) has simply dropped that much for 4 consecutive days? ohmy.gif

It looks to me like the unique visitors/sessions differences may very well be related to the new flow of design on the 4.0 site/framework where the visitor navigates slightly differently throughout the site from before. I think that possibly the 3.x store fronts navigation patterns/actions gave an inflated view of traffic as it was very session heavy, etc, etc....which might make the 4.0 numbers look smaller but most likely be more accurate.

I am going to look into a method for us to track this on a given site by comparing 2-3 different stats metrics and see what happens.

Captain
Thanks Adam!

Is there anyway to see the true exit pages in Urchin. Currently that does not seem to be available with the 4.0 migration.

The top exit page will always be index.asp because of the pageaction. I know I can see teh page action hits but I want to know where people are leaving.

Thanks.
sabres00
Neil-

You are correct in that it is not possible to do in version 4.0 since index.asp is every page. This is a small downfall with the way 4.0 is structured... very small when compared to the fact that Google is always looking for that index.asp page, which means once Google finds you, your pages should get better rankings more quickly.
MineralBeauty
Thanks for the quick response Adam. Please advise what conclusion you come to. It just doesnt make sense that my TRUE unique visitor stats to be 80% less then what it was previously. I can see a 10% decline maybe 20%... but 80% is way off!

Does monstersmile.gif have any updates for the surge in traffic that has been reported by myself and others.

I continue to receive an unusual amount of visits without a source. I am confident that the number of visits I am getting is not a true number. In addition, the visits I am noting don't last for more than 10 seconds. They don't appear to be robots, spiders, etc.

Keep us posted. Thanks
Captain
mgriffin,

I have seen the same thing... I monitor the forum stats using Urchin 5.

Page views etc are showing very high...

My guess is that Urchin is somehow counting GoogleBot or something... because GoogleBot has been pounding the forums.

I am looking in to this... I will probally have to call Urchin?

adminguy
Ryan's thoughts seem pretty dead on...but we have an odd mixture of some people's stats going to high now and others going to low. I think that there are a combination of factors here.

1) As mentioned before, the new layout probably allows for more accurate unique visitor/session counting since there are not so many unique sessions spawned in v4 compared to 3.x. I suspect that the previous numbers were artificially high and are more accurate with v4 carts.

2) tracking exits properly due to the single index.asp page...I am not too sure on the right solution here since again we cannot greatly increase processing overhead by using UTM or filters on all sites, etc, etc.

3) I am looking into your specific issue griffin. Your stats are configured properly, and most everything looks ok.

I do see the very large number of no referral sites, etc, etc. I have left a message with my contact at Urchin and will go over these items with Urchin directly to try and get some clarification. Once I do I will update this thread.
Captain
Thanks Adam.
mgriffin
Cool - thanks for the communication.
mgriffin
Any updates on the stats issue? In particular, the surge in stats on a daily basis. cool.gif
adminguy
Yes, I am posting a new thread on Tuesday that will cover the Urchin tracking module, stats reporting items such as this thread discusses, and timelines on any changes or implementations of note for our stats services.
purplekitty
I do not seem to have an update of stats since Tuesday. Anyone else showing this? 11/19 & 11/20 both show 0.
saxongifts
Looks like Urchin is having major problems....
<sound of someone dropping the ball>

Adam:

Any progress on this issue?
Captain
Saxon,

Sorry I missed these posts. sleeping.gif

I have forwarded to Adam for review. In the future if you have a stats issue, make sure you fill out a trouble ticket. I tried to read every post but every once in awhile I miss one. A ticket won't be overlooked. smile.gif

Capt:

Thanks for responding. I did open a ticket and it was closed without a resolution - the tech notes said it would be answered here.

Captain
I will look into why this occured... maybe support had something in mind that I am unaware.

More to come on this...
