Full Version: Wholesale Question
MonsterSmallBusiness Forums > MonsterCommerce > How do I?

Our wholesale is not a big part of our biz, so at this time we have them contact me directly and then I will process their order and ship it out.

Now, most places ask me what our minimum is...At this time, we have none really, but I noticed that when I do tell them that, they end up ordering only one item...What is a fair minimum for a wholesale order? Is there a place with some generic rules? If not, would you guys mind sharing what your rules are? Thanks so much.

What are you selling?

Maybe you could offer them a discount... like buy 5 get 10% off your order... give them more incentive to buy. I doubt there would be any rules... but as i've found with jewellery we're ordering.. the minimums range for 1000$ to 5000$

but these are all designer lines. i'd say if you're starting out... use friendly incentives to get people to feel like there's incentive to buy more of your stuff... not that you're forcing them to.

but i'm no experienced merchant.. this is only my humble opinion happy.gif

What industry are you in? What is the competition like? What are your margins? How many units do you need to sell to get a good ROI? These are all guestions and many more that you need to be thinking. I wouldn't respond to these questions in this forum, but you might give us your website address.

If someone does ask your minimum, then I definitely would not tell them we do not have one. Think about it ahead of time and be ready when you are asked. If you set the minimum too high or too low, you can always adjust it.

it obviously depends on what everyone else has mentioned. But, as a general rule of thumb, i would go with anywhere from 5-10 times your average consumer sale. i.e avg retail sale is $20, go with $100 to $200.

The math depends a lot on margins, time effort, and some other variables. But, given the fact that I'm already a few beers into the night, i wont...no...cant get into the math right now.

Thank you for your replies...

I was actually thinking more about number of items. We sell documentaries on DVD's, and we do give a break on the price of course as well as on the shipping..I am just trying to figure out if I should set the limit to 3 DVD's or 5 or another number. It's mainly smaller book stores and studios who want them at wholesale so they can sell them in their store...There is not really a competition to measure us by...but I will see what I can find out. Thanks for your help.
