Hi all,

We are all set to move into a new home next week up and I had the Cable people all scheduled to install our Cable modem so we can continue seamlessly working with our site. Our new home is in the San Bernardino Mountains in California that burned so badly last week. Our home fortunately did not burn but the cable company suffered major damage and has to repair their service to our community. We all that was destroyed up here I am sure that restoring cable is not a high priority.

So my question is: Does anyone use Satellite Internet, If so what do you think and can you recommend anyone to me.

Thanks
adminguy
I would advise against satellite internet connections if possible as they are notoriously troubled. If you do not have any options, then I would say go for it, and as always YMMV.....I have known several people though that have had satellite connections and none of them have ever seemed too fond of them.

I've had the same experience as adminguy... lots of not so good stuff with satellite. Cable, DSL and wireless (not to mention a direct fiber connection (drool, drool)) are all very stable and reliable connections in my experience.

I heard with Satellite you have practically no upload speed whatsoever. I'm not 100% sure on this, but it's what I heard a while back. If its your only option besides 56k then I'd go for it until cable/dsl are straightened out in your area.

EDIT: I should have used the spell check laugh.gif

In my area I've found DSL to be the most stable. We lost cable internet for 8 days once last year. Since then we've been on DSL with a very minimal amount of issues (most caused by power outages in the area).

I heard also that Satellite can be troublesome and unreliable.
We have been on Cable for about 5 years now and haven't been "out" for more than maybe 5 hours at a time (mostly just a half hour 99% of the time), but like Ultimate said mostly caused by power outages.
I found Cable to be much faster than DSL though. I guess it depends on what area you live in and how many people have DSL around you. Around here its a lot and it slows things down considerably, Cable doesn't have this problem.

I have Cable now and had DSL & satt. in the past.

Cable - Rocks biggrin.gif

DSL - Not too bad tongue.gif

Satt. - SUCKS mad.gif

I think the difference between Cable & DSL depends on your location. My location has a lot of Cable users, thus alot of people sharing the bandwidth, and it caused it to be very slow at times. Also my provider's customer service sucks. However, even thou the DSL's specifications are slower than Cable we do see a better speed since the DSL is not shared.

Yet, the general consensus still seems to be satellite = BAD!

Wow.... Sounds like a resounding "DON't GO SATELLITE" Thanks for everyones input. We will wait until they rebuild the cable system and stick with the cable modem. DSL is not available in the mountain town we are moving too but that is ok. The cable modem we are getting is even faster than the DSL we are used to. If we have to we will go dial up until the cable is back on line.

If I start ranting and raving inthe next few weeks, please forgive me since I assure you that Dial up will drive me completely insane crying.gif
