Is there any way with Urchin statistics to get the IP address of visitors? i believe that I am being "multiple clicked" by competitors on my per click advertising. To determine this I need to see individual IP addresses.
They show on the orders why can't we track them.
Has anyone else had trouble with this and what have you done?

I am the webmaster for www.liquidfence.com and we use
http://www.eztrackz.com for all of our tracking. You can track not only clicks but unique clicks and even track your sales too.
this was recommended to me by Stephanie at

Commerce and it works

Are you talking about Overture or Google PPC?

The reason I am wondering is because Overture has guards against multiple clicks from same IP #. Google on the other hand doesn't, but that is why you can set your max per day.

The problem then is that your comp hits your max per day and pulls you off. If they've got the time to bother with it they can really screw you. I've heard all these horror stories which is unfortunately why we haven't tried PPC yet.

Question for folks - I set up a 0% discount cookie for my CPC advertising through google. The intent was so that I could track the # of visitors to my site using the CPC advertising and compare it to what I'm paying Google.
However I only notice 1 or 2 entrances using the discount cookie I created. Very different from the number Google is giving me. Have you found that the Urchin Stats are updating the hits effectively? I'm seeing an upward trend in folks looking at my site so I believe they're coming in through that method, just not being tracked as such.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi.
I am talking about google multiple clicking. i might increase my overture spending for those reasons.
I have been really screwed lately. i was spending 3-4 dollars for every $100 in sales. Now it averages $10-12 per $100. nothing has changed with my competitors or myself.
I have found cpc to be the most effective still though
I did try to track with the zero discount and find it somewhat misleading as well. What was happening with me is that if customers are bookmarking the page and coming back then they do not retain the cookie. Thus they do not show in the zero discount tracking.. I first noticed this when I was disccounting and customers were calling to complain that the prices raised in the last hour that they were at the site previously. This was causing alot of lost sales. Since going away from the cookie method and just giving a straight dicount by the markdown method sales have increased tremendously.
Thanks about the
http://www.eztrackz.com i'll look into it.

On the topic of multiple clicking...
This concerns me because I have been planning on using google ads. I doubt if paying lawyer bills would help much (unless you sued Google successfully!). The exchange above has be wondering about your experiences with more traditional types of advertising, such as...
- small ads in newspapers or relevant magazines
- mass mailings
- cable tv ads (not as expensive as you might think, and great for targeting!)
Have these kinds of things worked for you? I have a friend who does $14 million in sales through the Internet (his company was around for years before he went to the web). He uses ads in mags like Parade and other magazines to get folks in. It appears to work but is costly.
Your experiences would be helpful.

My experience has been PPC is the most cost effective form of advertising, it took me a while to maximize roi. Once I learned which keywords and price I maximized revenue... it has been smooth sailing.
PPC matters very much on the ndustry you are in. PPC can be either highly effective or highly unsucessful depending on your business model, industry and conversion rates.

Unfortunately I'll probably never utilize PPC. 95% of my items are low ticket items (keychains). I don't think it would be worth it to spend the money at this point just to get someone who has a 5% chance of converting to a sale.
I'm currently working on just getting my link out there on other sites. That should increase the visibility and hopefully the page ranking as well...

I agree... the effectiveness of PPC depends entirely on the industry, margins and product line.

Can anyone explain exactly how you set up a discount code to track Overture. I have created the 0$ discount and have set it to cookie however I am not able to figure out how to write the link and how it will track in Urchin.
Never mind!! I just read up on how to write the code in the manual. Should have looked there first I guess. Amazing what you can find!

Multiple Clicks (Click Fraud)
We've been using google ads successfully for several weeks without any multiple clicks problem. I raised this concern with google and their rep tells me that they have instituted a lot of measures to identify click fraud and other practices that competitors might engage in. They also claim that they do not charge when this happens.
It would be easy to test, I suppose. You could have someone click ten times on one of your ads and see what gets recorded.
