I wasn't aware of this but apparently, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) -- the not for profit organization in charge of DNS -- is under contract to the US department of commerce. It would seem that the international community is not happy about this and wants more widespread control distributed evenly to other countries of the world.
