I'm currently building a site that sells custom rubber stamps. Many other stamp sites have the ability to show a preview of the text and variants (color, font, size) entered by the customer.

My thoughts are to place this preview "box" in the Long Description area of the product information.

Is this do-able by someone with limited html experience? Or wishfull thinking?

If I understand you correctly, I believe you will need custom programming. You want to have the variants selected displayed on the screen... as in the color of the stamp, font, and size that was selected would show the final product which would be a selected .
