We are trying to figure out a software in which we can optimize our pictures in bulk. We are trying to cut down our sites load time with our new site design. Anybody know any free programs that do this online?
Thanks
Also what is a good byte size for a picture to be? For example 12,000 bytes, etc...
Maybe someone should write and article on this, because this also kills business when your site loads so slow.
Thanks

krazykickz,
This is the program that I use all the time and it is FREE as you requested. you can set the quality as well as some of the other things. I also use this program to create the thumbnails and full size pictures on my site. Depending on the original quality will make the determination of the final picture size. I try to keep my thumbnails between 2K - 5K @ 100X100 pixles and the larger pictures between 6K - 12K @ 300X300 pixles.
I will tell you thought the above program will not work .gif files , in that case I use Photoshop or another graphics program to convert it if I want to have everything in .jpg format.

Hi,
Thanks, but this program optimize the image and make it a small byte size. This is really important as our site load time is much to slow. So when we come with our new site on v4.0 our site will load fast.
Thanks

This is a great subject and I'll write an article about it tonight. If you're looking for a wizard, I think one of the best wizards available is a plugin directly to Dreamweaver. You can download it for free at the Macromedia Exchange. I'll elaborate tonight.

krazykickz,
Yes this will optimize the pictures for you as well...
If you have downloaded the program her is how I do it....
1. Load program, under the files tab at the top, find the directory that your pictures are stored in that you want to change/optimize.
2. Click on the picture or pictures that you want to change then click on the settings tab.
3. In this section you control how the picture looks... You will have to figure out most of what each of the commands do by playing with them.
4. If you are simply optimizing the picture(s) select the no-resize option from the re-size pull down menu.
5. Click on the Preview output tab at the top of the right frame that contains your picture!
6. Make the adjustments to your picture with the slider bars on the left ... ie... JPEG Quality, brightness, contrast so on, you will see it change your picture on the fly.
7. Once you have got everything set to were you want it , you more than likely will want to save the optimized files in another directory.
8. If you want to add a prefix or suffix to your new optimized picture make sure and do that first.
9. Once you are done click on the files tab, at the bottom you will see the save-in box at the bottom of the screen. Change it to the directory you want your pictures to be saved to.
10. Click on the make or make all button. You can see the progress in the lower left hand corner.
Hope this will help you....
